Man you have a negative feel about Hollywood. Studios do produce origional works all the time just look at Inception. Also if Hollywood didn't base movies on books then what would they base it on? Scripts often start from books or are made into books before Hollywood picks them up. Look at HarryPotter for example based on a book but was something new and fresh out of hollywood. Avatar was also the first movie to really show off RealD 3D technology and that is something unique and fresh.

Nintendo produces enough sequels and sticks enough to their franchises. They do well at creating new experiances while keeping old content availible for those that like it. Also Brain Age may have been a big thing in the gaming industry that you may have thought was fresh and suprising. But Brain games and tests have been around for a century all Nintendo did was bring these games and tests to video games. If you want to call Hollywood unorigional for bringing RealD 3D since 3D has been done since the earlier half of the 1900's then Brain Age also isn't new. Also Nintendogs wasn't new then either because your forgetting Tamagotchi which came out offering a similiar experiance over a decade ago.

Nintendo is alot like Hollywood, I don't think thats a bad thing. Infact the whole entertainment industry is unique and alot alike. Movies, Games, Music are all very similiar. Remakes, solid IP and some fresh idea's inspired by existing content make up the respective industries!

There tend to be a couple noteworthy original movies from major Hollywood studios but the vast majority of Hollywood productions are sequels, remakes, or adaptations of novels, comic books, plays, TV series, or "Real life stories" ...

On the whole, it is fair to say that Hollywood has lost the ability to tell stories; but there are exceptions.
