He died because he was in either a faction or cult. Look at the tributes, there's plenty of evidence that Barry the Chopper could be with his partner and also there's Lan-Fan, who is an assasin in FMA. Lan-fan/Xing could easily be a faction, and Wonk could have been 1/2 of them or Barry/48.

Which is why I think Wonk could have been in a faction like that. Remember his seemingly random "1 or 2 shot" ability conversation? He could have been in a cult/faction that was given a one shot day kill to balance the game incase Mustang was recruited and poisoner was killed.
