Nintendo did this with Resident Evil 4 (and 4 other Capcom titles). In the end, 2 of them got cnacelled and two of them got ported to PS2. Nintendo has done this multiple times and is always stabbed in the back. The only time they've really benefited from a third party deal was the Zelda titles done by Capcom. And to a lesser extent, F-Zero GX/Star Fox Assault.
Also, if I was Nintendo right now, I'd do exactly what they're doing. Make a new console (and handheld) that utilizes the established marketbase while still trying to appeal to 'core' gamers. Its essentially what they did with GameCube...except now they are in the lead to improve their chances.

When the Wii first came out, they stated their reserves were about $4.5 billion. I'd imagine its substantially larger than that after how successful they were on the Wii and DS.
