Eisenhower's day, debt was low, the economy was mostly booming (cyclical stop-start issues throughout the late 50's, but the general trend was upward) the middle class was growing, unions were powerful and pervasive, and the tax rates on the wealthy were 70%
Almost utopian, if not for all the racism, sexism, anti-communist paranoia, and pervasive smoking

thats why i said "since," he was the one before things went down hill.

Right, but my indication is that the era that many libertarians point back to and speak of how "great" things were is an era of policies that would make most libertarians vomit
Though i've seen some real hardcore libs around here who say we haven't had a good president since Calvin Coolidge

I know Reagan is the one that sent us on our death spiral financially. I know Roosevelt did something that was another nail, Nixon actually attempted to help things sadly they backfired. I just forget who came first Eisenhower or Reagan, because whoever was before Reagan was the last good president that didn't kill our financial, political, and civil systems.

Carter, whose administration is remembered specifically as a time of American mediocrity
