First off, they were not trying to bring down the PSN, they were specifically taking information. Sony took down PSN, so strike the theory they were trying to take down the PSN.
So that only leaves they were trying to take CC information or corporate sabotage. Either way, they're looking for information and that goes against what you were saying that they weren't looking at the information.
Again, this is a pretty big deal. People need to know about it and need to take steps to protect themselves by watching their information and changing information if they need to. You can claim it could be for whatever you reason you want but as it stands, they did take that private information, that is straight from Sony's mouth. Just because nothing has happened doesn't mean it won't.
Whatever the case, I'm likely never to change your mind because you're blindly devoted. Luckily I don't really care if you don't monitor your credit and change your passwords.

There's no proof they were trying to take information, just that they had acess to it, and there's the bait and switch tactic, pretend to go for something to make your actual goal easier, this method has been more effective at briging psn down then anons brute force tatics, and again theres no proof they were looking for the info just that they had access to it and again theres no proof they took the info or even looked at it just that they had the ability to acess to it you are operating under an assumption of an assumption

yea i would love to hear sony release that. "don't worry, we believe that the hackers just showed us they could steal all our info. It was like in die hard 4, the guy just broke into the pentagon on his laptop to show us how weak our infastructure was" nobody worry, the hacker is a good guy, he won't use any of that. they were just proving a point
