Given that the two biggest titles in terms of sales currently in japan (ps3) are Everybodys Golf and Dynasty warriors, its not an amazing achievement. Mario is the biggest character in the gaming industry, with 3 times the userbase its no surprise its doing better than any PS3 game, especially considering the two biggest releases are from franchises that although are big in japan, dont touch mario. (why even bother mentioning the 360 :P, I doubt many, if any at all, of their games will push past 500,000 in japan.)
Still, its a great game and as such it deserves the success.
