I woud say they would have to be stupid not to regret it.
They spent over a million dollars to get him to sign something saying he would never do it again(Which, he probably wasn't going to anyway), while getting that entire community pissed at them and bringing down the PSN and other online stuff.
Also, while showing that if you do hack a sony product, the worst case scenario is you become famous and get off with a warning.
If I'm a hacker i'm intentionally targeting Sony now, so they can make a big deal about it and i'm easier to hire. Since this kind of stuff is basically job resume matieral in the hacking world.
This is why more experenced software companies smartly just ignore hackers.
When was the last time Microsoft sued a hacker?
