I've never been in a similar situation, though. While I'm not even sure enough of what my beliefs are to question them, my parents are very open-minded about everything and would be very eager to discuss such subjects if I wanted to become an atheist.

You're actully very right when you say that we all have certain beliefs that we don't question, and on which we base our further observations, but that's something to discuss another time.

While I'm glad you have parents with whom you can actually discuss things like these, without them causing a scandal, I sadly can't say the same about my own parents (and I base this on an experience I had with them 2 years ago, so I'd say I'd be overestimating them if I expected them to be understanding and not the other way around).

Fair enough, then. You seem to have reason to believe that they won't understand you. I guess faking your own murder is the only remaining option then, :P.
