1 - tell them you decided to be a non practicing christian and that you will still talk to god but do not want to go to church or do lent.

like that you won't be the odd duck at familly dinners (you'll still pray with them to respect their tradition), but you don't have to do the other stuff.

2- if you do go to church and do communion, see it as a sign of respect for their tradition and not a travesty.

Sorry, for some reason I missed this one.

1 - To them that would sound like I'm joining what they call "protestant cults", which would still be bad.

2 - But the thing is that I genuenly don't belive in that, and I'd feel wrong taking communion (not to mention that at this point the ideea of sipping wine from the same spoon as a hundred other individuals doesn't appeal to me). Also, I don't fee lcomfortable telling a priest personal things about myeslf, especially thins that I may have done and don't even consider bad (masturbgating, sex outside of marriage, watching porn etc.).

ok sorry, i didn't know catholics drank wine from a spoon, here (france, so not that far from rome) we only take a little piece of special bread when we do communion, we don't also try to get 100 diseases by licking the same spoon (no offence meant, i just think it's an incredibly dumb health hazard ^^)

and yeah if your parents are not just practicing closely religion but also somewhat extreemist (saying protestants are cults is extreem, sorry if it's blunt), then I don't think i can really gasp your situation.

Your only way might really just be to say: "Mom, Dad, I love you guys and you know I really do, but I just can't follow your faith, this is not something I believe in anymore". I see no other way than the blank truth for you.

Oh and it'd do that 1 hour before leaving back for university.... otherwise i'd be afraid to sleep ^^...
