So $500, eh? If I wanted a PS3 right now (which I don't) I'd have to start setting aside funds for a few months, as I don't have a lot of money and have never had a credit card. But that would mean no game purchases for several months. And by the end of the year the PS3 will probably have about 7 games I want. I already have 9 for the Wii, and will probably have near 20 by the end of this year if I minimize hardware purchases (aka no PSP like I've been considering). So for me the PS3 really isn't a priority console like the PS2 was (which I also waited for price drops on). I'll simply wait until it offers me a greater value for less money than they ask for now. If they drop PS2 compatibility completely, there is an excellent chance I may never get a PS3.
