That's not how that works. Technically the last generation is still going because the PS2 has not been discontinued. Just because the Wii can no longer compete against the 360 and PS3, doesn't mean this gen will die when the Wii 2 launches. |
Considering Wii is outselling PS3 in NA and 360 elsewhere still that's hardly not competing. Although if they can maintain that is debatable.
Ultimately, it boils down to who's selling more systems?
I guess I'm not assuming there will be a 720/PS4 response to Wii2. There will eventually be a 720/PS4 but as long as the current generation continues to sell well (regardless of Wii2 also doing well) MS/Sony have little to gain and a lot to lose jumping into another console generation. All three systems can share 3rd party titles. Sony particularly can afford to allow their strong 1st party line-up to differentiate them from Wii2 and maintain strong sales. MS has few exclusives these days so they'll really need to push Kinect more but it's also possible for them to remain competitive.
Since Wii2 is only a little more powerful it in no way obsolete's their current systems. And Wii2 will probably be aimed at attracting the Wii audience mostly (taking it back from Kinect/Move) and to a lesser extent maintaining core audience much better than the Wii did. If anything (based on the rumours) I see Wii2 as an attempt to block or defense against Apple entering the home console market.
If Sony and MS wait until 2014/2015 to launch new consoles, Nintendo could have another one out shortly after that meaning the next race would become 720/PS4/Wii3 effectively.
That would make the fact that 360 (for arguments sake) out sold the Wii in NA eventually over it's 5 year longer lifespan kind of mute because Wii/Wii2 vastly outsold it and Wii3 is competing with 720.
