I don't think you can count it that way.

If so, the GC outsold the Xbox - but only because it was sold dirt cheap for two more years after Xbox was off shelves having been replace by 360.

Once the new Wii (or whatever it's called) comes out, it's cased close.  Wii won all three regions.

That's messy of course, but that's the way it tends to go.

14 Microsoft Xbox (XB) 16.34 0.53 7.78 24.65
15 Nintendo GameCube (GC) 12.94 4.04 4.77 21.75

eh?

Regardless, the generation is generally considered ended once the first next gen system comes out.   By that standard Wii will almost certain have won every region.    For example, we don't compare 360 sales to PS2's in Japan even though between 2006-2010 PS2 outsold it 3.15m to 1.36m (yeah, I checked this one).   Why? Because it doesn't matter how many PS2's sold, that's last gen.  360 is considered to be competing with PS3/Wii.

It's true though that if Nintendo abandons Wii and it's sales tank and PS3/360 are around long enough, they may eventually pass Wii's total sales in those regions, but who cares?  By that time the new Nintendo system will be selling millions of units (presumably) and (most likely) outselling PS3/360 anyway.      That's kind of like Mike Tyson beating the crap out of Mohammed Ali and expecting to be cheered for it.   Saying you beat someone who's retired from the game is no accomplishment.  Showing you can go toe-to-toe with the new kid would be.

I hate this argument, defense, or attempted point.   As long as these consoles sit on the market and sell, their sales still count and are still factored in and still make profit for their respective companies (In many cases even MORE profit)  and meanwhile still bring joy and new experiences to many gamers purchasing them.

Obviously, that doesn't give people the immediate satisfaction of a true winner and loser but if by the time PS4,Xbox 720, Wii 2 are all out on the market and let's just say PS3,360,Wii are still on the market as well (Which is a very real possibility) , the sales for this previous generation are still counting and still selling (In many cases to people who couldn't afford them years earlier, or in countries who didn't get their hands on them as early as other people in other countries did.   This most certainly would NOT denote an end of the sales race.  It merely is the start of a new generation while the previous one is dying off.

The best example would be a having an endurance contest in which there is no end until all parties can't physically take another step (The real world equivalent would be the fact that their product is still selling on shelves enough to warrant continued production from the manufacturer)  .  We have the Sony team  , Microsoft team and Nintendo team.  The endurance will be on a scale of 1-10,  10 being a very rapid pace (The real world equivalent of this would be amount of units sold)

For example :

Sony team starts their endurance challenge at a level 3 for 5 minutes, upgrades it to level 5 for 5 minutes, and upgrades it again to level 8 for 5 more minutes before quitting out of exhaustion.  If we calculate a score for Sony, we would factor :  5 minutes at Level 3 (5x3 = 15)  5 minutes at Level 5 (5x5 =25)   5 minutes at Level 8 (8x5 = 40).

So in 15 minutes,  Sony compiled 80 endurance points.

Microsoft team starts their endurance challenge at a level 5 for 5 minutes, upgrades it to level 7 for 5 minutes, and downgrades it to  Level 4 for 3 minutes. If we calculate a score for Microsoft, we would factor :  5 minutes at Level 5 (5x5 = 25) (7x5 = 35) (4x3 = 12).

So in 12 minutes,  Microsoft compiled 72 endurance points.

Nintendo team starts their endurance challenge at a level 8 for 5 minutes, downgrades it to a level 7 for 5 minutes before they succumb to exhaustion.   If we calculate a score for Nintendo, we would factor 5 minutes at Level 8 (5x8 = 40) 5 minutes at Level 7 (5x7 = 35).

So in 10 minutes,  Nintendo compiled 75 endurance points.

So who would win?  The answer in this example would be clearly Sony.  Nintendo was a clear cut winner within the first 10 minutes with 75 points by 10 minutes in, unfortunately they couldn't keep going beyond 10 minutes and there is the crux. It doesn't matter if Nintendo trots out another player to begin a new race or not,  as long as the other players in the original endurance challenge are still going, it continues to count.  Nintendo may have already started a new race but that doesn't mean the original race isn't still going on.

It's true a new console generation begins when a manufacturer releases the first new console.  However, that does not imply that the previous generation has even remotely ended.
