Part of the appeal for me is that some of the smaller less expensive tablets are (somewhat) competitive with an ebook reader; and, while they're not as well suited to reading, this is (more or less) made up for by being able to do more things. With that said, I don't understand the appeal of the high end tablets at this point in time; beyond the fact that they're interesting technology.
