Had a question, i am getting a ps3 slim tomorrow (160 GB)  my old 40 GB ps3 has been having issues for about  a year (fan kicking on high very quickly even when its 60 degrees in the house)  called a repair guy and he said it needed a thermal paste job but even with that it may have already caused some damage, so being safe and just buying a new one

so heres the question, i have a 500 GB hard drive installed in my old ps3 and would like to put it in the new one, i know if you backup your system with an external hard drive it also backs up copy righted files but only will restore them on the same system.  i have heard that if you use the data transfer ability and use an ethernet cable it transfers copy righted saves to the new system and deletes them from old.  my question is if i di the data transfer, are the copy righted saves then linked to that new system so that i can then do a backup on the new system, put the new hard drive in and restore.

sorry for the text block just wanted to explain it thoroughly lol

You'll keep everything from a data transfer, and almost nothing from a backup and swap.

The problem will be if you want to keep the 500 GB drive and don't have another drive that it can fit on in the interim.

so i should be OK?  my main concern was that after i did the transfer i wouldnt be able to back up the transferred data to change hard drives.  it seems most of the games i am in the process of playing are copy protected lol

with the free space thing i went and delete pretty much all the game data that i wasnt playing and all the DLC and stuff and will just redownload later
