How so? It's a small device that plays music. I don't think they really NEEDED to add multi-touch but it definitely doesn't detract from the device, as it allowed Apple to make it much smaller and still display coverflow and other stuff without also needing to add physical buttons to it. While I think it may have been a little unnecessary, there are definite benefits to adding multi-touch, which doesn't make it gimmicky, just superfluous in the eyes of some people.
