OT: I don't think many people can jump out of a burning plane and survive, which leads me to think that he was never in the plane. Maybe he shot it down with that AK? Or maybe he just parachuted out. But he says that he did it, so maybe it was to take out some huge villain.

nah, he picked that AK after the plane was crushed, he probably had a fight on top of the plane, which ended up killing the pilot somehow, so the plane went down, he jumped and used his scarf as a parachute and landed safely.
