Yeah, the chain thing is to get more KP. With KP, you can buy summonstones, equipment, accessories, etc that aren't available at the shop. Lightning can restore some of her bravery with the medic role. I agree with the reports thing, that you have to buy them and level them up. Though, the characters are pretty cheap though, compared to alt costumes.
Vaan is probably my favorite in the game.
