So we should increase paper consumption because paper doesn't come from the Amazon and the Amazon is being deforested?

I come from a family heavily invested in the timber industry and even my father and uncles would shake their heads at the sheer insanity of some of the things being said in this thread.

People aren't going to stop planting trees because demand for paper is lowered. Jesus. The paper you buy comes primarily from softwood. Softwood trees are rarely replanted. They grow naturally and are harvested on a cycle. Leave them be and they'll just keep, you know, fucking GROWING. They're the first fucking trees to repopulate a forest because they're sturdy and grow much faster than their hardwood brethren, which ARE replanted because the life cycle is so slow (they grow more slowly and only grow after softwoods have created a canopy under which a hardwood seedling can thrive).

Most of the "reforestation" happening in western nations is because of the elimination of clear-cutting and old farmland being reclaimed by nature after we, as a culture, stopped cutting down trees just for shits and giggles.
