How ugly they can get? I don't think they really get ugly usually they are pretty civilized though sometimes they do turn ugly. But when the personal attacks start flying and they get too far out of control the mod's usually jump in and moderate them.
I've never been in a debate that I felt got to far out of hand. Even debates about my faith in which I had to defend it. I found that the athiests and Christian's on this site are fairly intelligent and don't tend to attack each other unesecarily! Religious debates are the most ugly and even in those cases I've never found them to be all that ugly!
