Not sure. I guess it depends on whether or not the size of the files are compressed or not. ( although the difference is not noticeble with the naked eye ).
The files I download are not compressed in anyway. To be honest a Quad layer DVD would have been fine for HD, but it's the extra features and stuff that make BD easier. The actual film on a BD Disc is never bigger than 12 GB. ( The only ones that have been, I found is King Kong. Weighing in at 13 GB. )
It is possible to compress a BD movie dile down to 4.5gb. Barely noticable difference.
