The size of the country doesnt matter, its the city planning and infrastructure. Since your infrastructure and cityplanning is built around cheap gas, of course people have to drive more. Again, the size of the country doesnt matter that much. I go 10 miles by bus to and home from university three days per week.
Edit: The US commercial and industrial life is also dependant on a much more mobile labour force than most other countries, also a result of cheap gas.
Beware, I live!
