About as much per litre as you Yanks pay per gallon. Just one of the reasons I have no intention of ever getting a driver's license, let alone a car.

I do ride a bike in the summer, but I always need a car...houses and locations get pretty spread out in the US compared to smaller countries...

The size of the country doesnt matter, its the city planning and infrastructure. Since your infrastructure and cityplanning is built around cheap gas, of course people have to drive more. Again, the size of the country doesnt matter that much. I go 10 miles by bus to and home from university three days per week.

Edit: The US commercial and industrial life is also dependant on a much more mobile labour force than most other countries, also a result of cheap  gas.
