No major release from Rockstar has been a commercial failure this gen, the team might not be Rockstar but the game is being marketed under the rockstar banner. The marketing for this will ensure it's at least a relative success even if the game is mediocre. If it is a critical success, this game will sell akin to Red Dead Redemption, count on it.

I personally thought Midnight CLub Los Angelos was a let down, although I believe it sold okay

Exactly, it was a so-so game at best but not a commercial failure.
