Just found this article following up what I said above. You do get to keep experience and loot online for your dedicated co-op character only. So you just can't take that character into your single player.

Ooo, some people might be turned off by that, but I like a dedicated single player save, and a dedicated multiplayer save. I'll be picking this up, but now I have to convince my cousin to do it as well...
