If you think ylod is anywhere as big as rrod then you are wrong. There are many reasons for it. No. 1: PS3 had a low userbase when it was selling the 60 GB models.
No. 2) Sony took steps so quickly that it is quite astounding, they had hardware changes in almost every new model. I was lucky enough to buy the 40 GB one since I usually buy the newer ones and I had a VERY bad experience with the 360 prior to the PS3's purchase. The 60 GB was available but it was discontinued and I thought why buy a discontinued model since it might have heat issues like the 360. I was careful enough.
No. 3) 360 did not competely eradicate this problem till the latest 360 model of the jasper chip and the 360 slim. There is no 3 year warranty for the slim, if you have noticed.
The PS3 on the other hand released the slim only 2-3 years after launch and that is the model that has sold the most. So again, percentage decreased.
360 launched the jasper model 3 years(?) after launch and the slim 4.5 years after launch. By that time the damage done was high.
So overall, if you look at it logically, you would realise that the rrod problem is a lot bigger than ylod. I didn't even know about ylod's until 360 fanboys started quoting it for every rrod argument. I was like "wth is this sh*t ylod never heard of it".
RROD was everywhere on the news and the internets so much that MS had to announce a 3 year warranty otherwise they wouldn't have even managed to sell half of what they have right now. The bad word of mouth would have killed it.
