Yes in this case you do need the official numbers, surveys are simply that, anybody can take them. Why dont I go to the US and ask people what they think of Australian Rules Football... because they dont know truly what it is doesnt mean Australia doesnt.
Surveys are good in some factors not in all. In this case you cant rely on surveys as some people can be bias in their responses. Your last sentence... really?
