Squirtle is the best. I rarely ever evolve him... I evolve him at level 99, and again at level 100. You can just hold and keep tapping B when the evolving thing comes up so he never evolves. 

I know some people who like Pikachu, others Charmander, others Psyduck and some even Snorlax. There's just so much there for kids' imaginations to explore and enjoy. That's why it's still so strong in a certain age group and those who enjoyed it in the past don't feel ashamed admitting so and continuing to enjoy it.
