As great as Red is you would probably be better starting with the more modern games, they added a lot of optomisations to stuff like inventory management etc.

Well I can't justify dishing out for a DS right now with 3DS on the horizon, so I can only play the GBA versions, and that kind of limits the modern spectrum :p
