The plan is to offer developers a way of going to digital downloads only. This is great for young developers and those with low budgets or even someone who wants to try something fresh or new. They are not getting rid of physical media, infact they stated that. Just another way to offer games to people who do not care for physical media and a cheaper alternative for developers.
