In olden times at the battle of Somme half a million people died in a day, but that was old warfare.

Modern warfare has substantial losses and you are right in the respect that it is quite alot of soldiers to lose in a week when compared to the situation in Afghanistan, but then again I don't think that the AU soldiers are anywhere as trained and have as sophisticated equipment as say the UN forces in Afghanistan, so it's sort of understandable but still a bit surprising.

Indeed, but then again, we only know the losses of our troops. We don't really get figures of how frequently the Taliban take losses... and I'll imagine that it's probably a lot higher than ours.
