Ultimately all of this is arbitrary fan wank anyway, as we seem to be at odds not only with naming and numbering, but who belongs in what (where does the Atari 5200 go? Gen 2 or Gen 3?, as well as the occasional semi-joking revisionist talk of Wii being part of the 6th generation), whether handhelds are integrated into the console generations (i say they aren't. 3DS is a 6th handheld gen system), then we could talk about when generations begin and end

It's another part of the gaming lexicon that badly needs to be standardized, like classifying games on the sliding scale of hardcoredom to casualocity, or defining gamers themselves
