They'd swallow a small company up quicker than Standard Oil swallowed up it's competitors back in the 1800s

I dont know about that but I didnt see AT&T 'swallow' Verison when they appeared.

Maybe they didnt consider them a threat when they started. I have no idea about the state of US Telcos, so I cannot comment there.
The difference is, if the big 3 see a threat from the beginning, theyd be able to stamp it out before it takes a hold.
