if set right it helps improve the cornering stability and traction of the car by adding/shifting extra weight toward the front or back of the vehicle
like those pick-up truck/ute drivers you sometimes see carrying around a concrete slab or sandbag in the load area to keep the back from skipping out at speed
also sometimes found in the front of old VW Beetles for much the same reason
