The color thing mattered more for haters looking for an excuse than those that simply didn't buy the system. I would say that lack of mass appeal for the games is the biggest reason. The highest sellers were a Mario Kart game and a Smash Bros game, and one of those is even considered a weaker entry in the series.
A flashy-first game is awesome when it comes out. A great-first game is awesome forever.
