Sure, Princess Peach is weak and should have been replaced by Samus Aran of the Metroid series. That being said, none in the top 50 of Guinness's top 50 video game characters of all time had the impact of those 9 Nintendo characters and 1 Sega character. Not in my opinion has there ever been a more iconic top 10 then the one you just quoted me from.
Sure, there are new characters for new generations, but new generations don't matter in my opinion. Older generations laid the road for those after them. At least Guinness could show some respect and not name any character past the PS1 era in the top 50. Seriously.

Sure they had their time. If we did a top 50 of the greatest NBA players, would Michael Jordan be replaced by LeBron James? Would Kobe Bryant replace Magic Johnson? Would Dwight Howard replace Wilt Chamberlain? Would Chris Paul replace John Stockton? Would Kevin Garnett replace Hakeem Olaujuwon?
The point I am making is if you are going to do "Top 50" lists, then please give respect to those who paved the way. Video games are not far off from sports in hero worship, therefore I believe they should follow the same formula when concocting these lists. Otherwise, you pull a Rolling Stone "Top 100 Greatest Guitarists" and disrespect many far superior guitarists when you put a "no talent, happened to be the lead singer of the band who ushered in Grunge" Kurt Cobain as the 12th greatest guitarist of all time.

You comparison doesn't really apply because there are ALOT less amazing basketball players then there are good video game characters. Its not that those characters don't DESERVE the spot, rather other characters deserve the spot too. Plus unlreated , its great marketing for NEW IP's.
