So after reading this, this is a little scary because it does make complete sense in how it works:

http://www.psnathome.com/general/ps3-hackers-can-now-ban-legitimate-users-and-unban-consoles.html

  • 1. Hacker gets banned for using custom firmware
  • 2. Hacker goes to a forum and grabs a random PSN username from forum tags
  • 3. Hacker changes their console ID to a random ID and the forum users user name
  • 4. Hacker plays as random forum user name until they get themselves and random forum user banned.
  • 5. Go to step 2

While there are no cases of anyone doing this, it's apparently know that the person using custom firmware can modify and send whatever information, including PSN username and console ID, they want to Sony.

That's actually enough to make me take my PSN tag off my sig (and not a big deal since I haven't updated it for probably close to a year).

Yeah, that totally probably could happen.  As far as granted someone just autonomous banning powers though, that'd be stupid.
