The same way that one can use other apple products to communicate with each other (ipad controlling apple t.v., etc...), is the same way that Nintendo should start doing that with their products.  What would be cool is if the 3DS has a hidden feature in it to act as a remote control for the next Nintendo home console.  Although perhaps that would drive down the sales of home console remotes...  Either way, I could see Nintendo doing something like that.  I mean, the original Wii Remote was going to have touch based controls had the DS failed in general - That was in one of the Iwata Asks Sessions fo Wii.

I mean, Microsoft, Apple, and Sony all have the advantage of integrating all their peripherals to work with one another.  And that's mainly because they aren't one dimensional companies like Nintendo (just gaming).  They have a wider span of multi-functional products and so it makes sense for them to make each one of their product multipurpose devices so that they can all cross over with each other.  Nintendo doesn't have that element, but they could perhaps offer consumers some sort of added bonus for having both a portable and home console system.
