Don't know about anime, it's a pretty grey area. Most of it is on TV to start with, DVDs and BDs are for the fans of a series. The woudn't-have-bought-it bit most definitely applies in the case of anime, for the huge majority of series. And since that article was not about morals and law but about damage, none done there, and I've dled and watched all the anime for which I've later bought a copy, and it's highly unlikely that I'd have bought anything if the anime hadn't impressed me enough to make me want a physical copy.
