MS jumped in with an failure but since they have billions lying around they stuck at it when many give up.
Apple wont go into the home console market and focus on there mobile market because they dont have 1st party devs, current gaming model only works on phones and web based platforms and they would need some money and marketing to pull consumers away from the big established 3.
But Apple could come in and fail then if they follow MS will get it right after building up an 1st and 3rd party suite for there next venture.
Of Course That's Just My Opinion, I Could Be Wrong
