considering that current rumours suggest that apple TV is going to get apps I think Apple are just about to jump in lol. 

I think Samsung is the only other company big enough to launch a competitive gaming console, with the technical experties and supply chain to deliver one. They already make a bunch of components for consoles anyway lol so they could make most of it in house to lower costs. I could see it happening.
