It's a genre that is a lot more versatile than music... portal as basically a FPS/puzzle game is a perfect example.
In the end what will happend is people like me that don't buy yearly itterations of madden or fifa will aslo be skipping the CoD games for longer and longer periodes.
What's a shame though it that there are so many online games now that the players are dispered on 10 identical games (4 CoDs...) and that there are very few players for other inovative game plays like AvP... which while lacking the same polish, do offer a fresh take to gameplay.
That said, major franchises are needed to have a nice and well polished experience... just not every single year...
