I should clarify my comment on the FFVI gameplay--

It's bad because it's broken.

Each character has their special abilities that are totally unbalanced.  You have people like Edgar that destroys everything and then you have a pretty useless Celes.  You have something like Sabin that takes effort but the effort is worth it and then you have something like Cyan where you sit and wait.  You also have ones like Relm, Gau, and Strago that can be decent but totally aren't worth the effort that are needed to be only decent.

There's just no real balance there.  Cyan is a fantastic character that has some great stuff in the World of Ruin but I never have him in my party if I don't have to because his special ability sucks.  What generally happens is you have Edgar, Sabin, Gogo, and then the people with the highest magic.  Those special abilities are just largely wasted.

Next, Evade.  It's broken.  It doesn't work.

Finally, there's just the traditional turn based combat.  It may be traditional and it may be what worked then, but that doesn't make it good.  There's some strategy in deciding how to level your characters with the magicite, but that's just obnoxious micro management.  The rest is just mindless button mashing which really isn't that fun.

Like I said, FFVI is my favorite game of all time but it is in no way due to the gameplay.  It was acceptable at the time, but if that were released in a new game today it would get slaughtered.  That part has not aged well at all.

Celes useless?!? She's one of the strongest party member you can have! High magic, good overall stats and she's one of the few who can use Illumina and the Atma Weapon. Yes Runic sucks but in the end game every special ability sucks, Edgar's tools are worthless in Kefka's tower.
