Top 5 rules on how to be a gamer, while fitting in normal society:
Rule 1: NEVER talk about games outside of the internet or home.
Rule 2: NEVER buy niche games from stores, always buy online.
Rule 3: ALWAYS agree with someone that says anime, games, Star Trek ,French cartoons or stamp collecting is weird.
Rule 4: NEVER yell out Bayonetta during sex.
Rule 5: DO NOT get a Tri-Force tattoo. Game T-Shirts are allowed, but they either have to be ironic or fit in with your hipster fashion sense.
These rules generally work, but they can annoy you a little when you want to talk about your hobby in the real world. I've also found over the years that we as gamers are just as judgemental as everyone else. I've been surprised so many times by people who don't fit the gamer stereotype, but they have an interest in gaming. I've met a body builder who loved Oblivion and Bioshock, a biker who loves Metal Gear Solid and Gran Turismo, a Lebanese gang member (close friend) who adores Dragon Age and God of War ( I recently went with him to pick up the Ultimate Edition) and I've always been taken a back.
The point is, you shouldn't have cared what the guys were saying and you should have just ignored them, mainly because half the population of world is filled with ignorant dick heads and any attempt at educating them will only lead to an aneurysm. It's nice that you tried, but your better off waiting until the day you see a person pick up a pre-owned copy of Cross Edge and then try and start a conversation with them.
