An armed rebellion would give the army a very good excuse to crush it. Given the protestors have no organization they would basically be an armed and unorganized mob, wouldn't stand a chance against a modern well equiped military.
Their only hope that Mubarak leaves in the short term is that the army doesn't stand behind him - they have pretty much all the immediate power in the country.
