Dude, there are a shit-ton of awesome American beers.
You're confusing "American beer" with "mainstream, shitty American beer".
Most mainstream beers taste like shit, period. It doesn't matter if they come from Japan, American, Canada, or Europe. To become "popular", they have to create a beer that doesn't offend anyone's taste buds. The result is watered-down crap that no one with a brain really LIKES, they just drink it because it's there.
