I cant believe i just registered just to shed some light onto this, because its really bugging the hell out of me your notion of Flash memory costs
For starters ill like point out
(like others have mentioned) that Big NGP franchises would be keeping most of PS3 assets intact, of course it wont take as much detailed textures for a 5" lower res screen and will undoubtedly use compression like the 360.
But if you think that a game like Uncharted or Hideo Kojima (next project he plans to show on E3) which offer near PS3 experience on a handheld will be available at 2GB/4GB you are dreaming, with all those graphics assets and open world environments and whatnot
Now lets talk about Flash card prices
I dont know which of you mentioned 16GB card costing $50 and around $20 for Sony since they are mass producing and not paying royalties etc. This couldn't be further from the true
You can buy as an average Joe a 16Gb flash card for as low as $20 and a 8GB flash card for as low as $9 and thats for the general public right there no special prices going on there.
For Sony, making their own proprietary flash Card and mass producing would significantly reduce cost they would be spending money on the raw materials alone not royalties, no profits, no taxes there. realistically a 16GB game card could cost as low as $10 and a 8GB game card card anywhere from $3 to $6. lets not forget this would be the price of a regular working read/write flash card, which they dont even need. They could use some sort of modified ROM memory with only the leftovers on space being actually writable for Save game data and DLC like they said. So The prices i provided could be even lower and closer to that of optical disc
Now im not saying they would or should use 16Gb from the get go, (though with Kojima you never know) $10 still adds a lot of unneeded cost ATM. The most likely solution i see is 4Gb and 8GB from day one, they shouldn't have any problems whatsoever with the 8Gb card for full fledged games liek Uncharted and the like.
I think anything below 2GB will be downloads only, on Eurogamer SCEE mentioned that titles with smaller footprint on memory would be PSN only, Shuhei Yoshida said something similar too
3DS/PSP sized games just not gonna happen with full fledged AAA titles on the physical distribution area
