In 1971 Egypt offered to sign a peace treaty with Israel if they gave the Sinai back. Israel preferred expansion over security so said no. This led to the Yom Kippur War which was a close call. The US saw it as an opportunity to bring Egypt into the US orbit and keep the Soviet troops out of the Middle East (they were threatening to intervene) so they prevented the Israelis from destroying the encircled Egyptian Third Army. They also realised that another war could break out in the future should Egypt not get the Sinai back and it was better to let them have it and normalise relations with Israel. Also Israel didn't have to worry about fighting the Arab worlds strongest military power any longer.
