It is a big win for SONY to keep the thieves offline, of course the next step for SONY will be to release a hardware update that prevents offline hacking as well. When that happens it should minimize any growth in the piracy sector for PS3.

A hardware update will not be so easy.    Basically they would have to change their entire security setup and that would cause major problems with the way their old systems work.  Basically software would have to work with both new and old security and thats not an easy feat.  and I seriously doubt it would happen any time soon.

It is slightly complicated, but its wouldn't require an entirely new security setup. It would require an extension of the current security with the holes closed and allow current PS3's to ignore the additional security measures. Hell i am pretty sure SONY will do this, the only catch is how long will it delay the next hardware revision and price drop?

The way Sony has fixed keys is whats causing the problem from my limited understanding.  And the only way to fix it is to change that.  And I don't see a basic extension doing so.  So again I believe it would require mostly new setup with a security key that isn't fixed/predictable.
