In terms of saving game companies... that Playstation Android hybrid will help create more revenue for some companies. Selling PSone, and possible PSP or PS2 games on Android phones is huge.
It's a low risk and small investment that gets their games out to a huge audience.
Win win?
IMO they used that to leverage developer support for NGP. That and the fact that it seems really easy to port games onto.
