Though I will mention I'm no saint when it comes to believing propaganda without doing proper research (3 years ago and before).

I'm no fan of the Iranian theocracy, which does have a fairly poor human rights record and bans candidates from standing for election because they deem them not to be Islamic enough. But at least Iran has a semblance of democracy which can't be said about the rest of the states in the area (which our Western Governments shamefully support and prop up). I find the current protests in some parts of the Arab world very encouraging for grass roots democracy. Hopefully they can finally get rid of their dictators and we (as in the West) won't get involved to sabotage it like we have done in the past (case point Iran).

Eh, it depends on from which viewpoint you look at it (based on interests, etc.). For example, personally, I'm not a fan of Iranian theocracy either, and I'm in much agreement with your first reason as to why, but not with the second reason.

However, I will agree about the current protests being pretty encouraging for setting up a democratic state (hopefully).
