It's not a stupid law at all. If you want target practice you need a secure space, where the chances of hurting yourself or others is very very limited. Your backyard is not a secure space, regardless of how big it may be.

Someone may be walking around in it, and you may accidentally shoot that persom (for example).

Are you firing blindfolded?

They shooter may be drunk. Aslo, there may be large vegetation in that huge backyard, so the person walking around there may not be seen.

So a tresspasser on your property? I would shoot them, they shouldn't be there. Anyone who should be there )ie lives on the property) Would know to be careful and announce themselves when the know someone else is target practicing.
